I lifted my hand to my eye again.

‘Alice, there’s some things you need to know,’ Dad said, staring down at Mum’s bag.

‘Oh, I know them all,’ I said breezily. ‘Just because you decided to keep it all from me, doesn’t mean I didn’t find out. I probably knew before Mum did.’

Dad stared at me with his stupid wide eyes that I used to trust.

She hadn’t known about the money at the point I’d found out. It was obvious from the way she swanned about giving people air kisses and having manicures and drinking gin in the day. When she found out, I thought, she’d snatch me like a protective mother snake and we’d head off together. We might live in a small flat, on top of each other but happy. We were better off without him, we would tell each other.
